Key points to ensure a compliant installation.

Exit Signs

Section E4.5 of the Building Code ‘Exit Signs’ requires that an exit sign:

  • Must be clearly visible to persons approaching the exit.
  • Must be installed on, above or adjacent to each door providing direct egress from a storey to an enclosed or external stairway, passageway or ramp serving as a required exit; and on, above or adjacent to a door to an external access balcony leading to a required exit.
  • Must be positioned above or adjacent to each door from an enclosed stairway, passageway or ramp at every level of discharge to a road or open space.
  • Must be at any door serving as, or forming part of, a required exit in a storey required to be provided with emergency lighting in accordance with section E4.2 of the building code, which sets out requirements for emergency lighting.

Emergency Lighting

  • If the exit from any room does not open onto a space which has adequate natural light in the event of an emergency, then emergency lighting would be required.
  • Emergency lighting & exit signs shall be connected to a dedicated circuit.

Maintained to 2293.2-2019

Standards require emergency and exit lighting to be tested for the following:

  • Identify type of emergency light.
  • Maintained - a maintained emergency light is continuously on and when the power fails it switches to a battery powered emergency output.
  • Non-maintained - a non-maintained emergency light is not normally lit and activates only when the power fails.
  • Sustained - a sustained emergency light has two lamps: one lamp is powered by the 240V mains and the other lamp is activated only when the power fails.
  • Check all lighting is operational under mains power.
  • 90 minute mains power loss test.
  • Identify any battery powered globe failures.
  • Identify any emergency lighting that fails to operate for less than 90 minutes.
  • Clean luminary on 12 monthly test.

Frequency is 6 monthly and 12 monthly.
