Fire hose reels are an essential primary fire fighting device required to be installed within a building depending on its size and classification. Fire hose reels, when required, are located to provide complete building coverage and a controlled continuous supply of water to combat a fire.

Key points to ensure a compliant installation.

  • When connected to a street fed fire service, fire hose reels should only be installed by a licensed plumber.
  • Hose reels shall be connected to a dedicated fire service.
  • Fire service shall be no less than DN25.
  • Hose reels shall be sited within 4m of an exit in accordance with the Building Code of Australia (BCA).
  • If additional hose reels are required for coverage, they shall be sited along the normal path of travel to an exit.
  • All points of the floor shall be within the arc of the hose length + 4m (hose stream).
  • The hose reel assembly shall be compliant with AS 1221-1991.
  • A minimum radial clearance 100mm around the hose reel.
  • Stop valve height shall be 1,000mm +/- 100mm.
  • Centre of hub shall be between 1,400mm & 2,400mm from finished floor level (FFL).
  • Minimum flow rate 0.33 L/s for a 19mm hose.
  • Any valve that can isolate fire water shall be padlocked in the open position and marked with a compliant tag.
  • A sign is only required if the hose reel is installed in a cupboard, cabinet, recess or in an obscure location.
  • Fire hose reel instructions shall be clearly visible.

Fire hose reel servicing is carried out in accordance with standards by our fully qualified technicians. Repairs to fire hose reels are carried out when required and we carry a range of spare parts. We always have hose reels in stock should any require complete replacement.

Frequency is 6 monthly and 12 monthly and a flow test conducted on the annual service.

Maintenance tags are stamped to reflect the date and level of service carried out and a report is emailed to the site contact.
