Fire Pumps & tanks Installation, Service & Maintenance

Fire pumps and tanks are required when the reticulated street main (or in some cases where there is no street main) is unable to meet the design flow rate of a hydrant system.

The pumps are controlled by pressure sensors. When a fire fighter opens a hydrant, a sprinkler activates or a hose reel is used, water is released and the pressure drops. The pressure sensors will detect this drop and automatically start the duty fire pump. The only way to switch off a fire pump is for a fire fighter to do this manually in the pump room.

Installed to AS 2941-2002 & AS2304-2011

Key points to ensure a compliant installation.

  • Determine the design flow rate of the hydrant system.
  • Select the appropriate fire pump set to meet the design flow rate while factoring in the hydraulic loss of the hydrant system.
  • Uninterrupted power supply in accordance with AS 3000.
  • Separate power supply for each pump.
  • Determine the infill rate for the water storage tanks.
  • Select the appropriate size tanks to provide a minimum 4 hour water supply.
  • Ensure a 1m clearance around the fire pump set.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Remote start fitted to booster cabinet.
  • Tank level indicator (if required) fitted to booster cabinet.
  • All alarms monitored on a continuous basis.
  • Storz suction line minimum DN150.

Maintained to AS1851-2012

As these systems are for the exclusive use of DFES it is vital they are maintained to standards.

We highly recommend fire pumps be monitored.

Unmonitored fire pumps will run to destruction.

We have our own monitoring service if required.

Our experienced technicians will test your pump in accordance with standards, fill out the log book and report any defects.

Frequency is Monthly, 6 monthly, 12 monthly, 5 yearly & 10 yearly (tanks).

Note: For fire hose reel pump sets only the 6 monthly test shall apply.
